Painting
Question:
What is your official training?
Answer:
I trained with Enjoy Your Face which is the company hired by Disney to paint at all their theme pars, and have taken classes with Pashur, Olivier Zegers, Mark Reid, The Wolfe Pack, and Jinny. I attended The Face And Body Art International Convention in 2004 and took 3 days of intensive classes with masters in my field.
Question:
How did you get started painting?
Answer:
I applied for a job at a local party store and was asked if I would be willing to learn. I said yes, and I did. Partially this was in avoidance of learning balloon twisting. I didn't really start painting bodies until late 2005, and the reasoning there was it was something new to do.
Question:
How long does it take to paint a person?
Answer:
Bodies: Depending on the design and whether I'm using a paintbrush or an airbrush, anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Faces: I can paint all of my faces within 5 minutes. I prefer to take longer, and they admittedly look better if I take longer, but typically I move very quickly when I have a long line.
Events
Question:
What have been some of your favorite events?
Answer:
I was able to do a date on The Van's Warped Tour in 2006, and absolutely loved it.
Question:
What kind of events do you paint for?
Answer:
I paint for private birthday parties, country clubs, fairs, and festivals. Body painting is a fantastic way to draw a crowd at trade shows and concerts.
Question:
How much do you charge?
Answer:
My rates are based on a sliding scale that is affected by demand, supplies needed, and event. Typically for face painting I charge $100/hr, and body painting is $250/hr. I am happy to negotiate though, and will give discounts to charitable causes.
Question:
What costumes do you wear?
Answer:
I have been an elf, a fairy, a princess, and a rockstar.
Conventions
Question:
How far are you willing to travel for work?
Answer:
I would love to travel to other cities to paint. I would require a negotiation of how my travel expenses would be paid but, I am very flexible.
Question:
Can I model for you?
Answer:
For face painting, most of my models are kids who come through my line or the store. My topless models are friends who I coerced into doing it, and all of them are 18 and up.
Products
Question:
What brushes do you use?
Answer:
I use sable brushes by various companies, although I prefer Loew-Cornell. I use 3 brushes: two #4s, and a #00. I also use make-up sponges by Mehron. When air brushing I prefer to use Iwata brushes and pressurized CO2 rather than an air compressor.
Question:
Why not use acrylic paint or spray paint?
Answer:
These are NOT a good idea. Acrylics and spray paint both contain chemicals that are not safe to use on the skin and can cause permanent scarring in the case of an allergic reaction. Google it, it's scary what some people will let you put on them.
Question:
What kind of paint are you using?
Answer:
Actually I don't use paint at all. All my work is done with professional grade makeup that is FDA approved to be used on the body. I learned how to paint with Snazaroo, but found I preferred the consistency of Mehron's Paradise line, the neon or day glo colors you see in my work are made by Kryolan.
Miscellaneous
Question:
Will you design a tattoo for me?
Answer:
It depends on what you want. I am willing to try, but make no promises. I designed my own tattoo, and have done several for friends, but I suppose I'd have to start charging a fee....
Question:
Why not just become a tattoo artist?
Answer:
Short answer: because I don't want to. Long answer: I'm not confident enough in my skill as an artist to permanently mark someone. I love painting people, I can erase mistakes, and if they don't like it, it washes off in the shower.
Question:
Are you a clown?
Answer:
No. I will go to events in costume if requested, but am not trained as a clown. Clowning is an art form and takes years of experience and practice to be truly skilled.
